The National Alliance on Mental Illness is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization helping families and individuals affected by mental health conditions build better lives through education, support, and advocacy. Position Summary
The Lead Educational Presenter is a community-facing position. The intern would support our presentation team, serve as a principal community educator, and lead educational presentations to high school students (among other groups). Our team delivers presentations to high school students, parent/caregiver groups, community associations, nonprofits, college students,
workplaces, and the general public. The purpose of the presentations is to reduce stigma around mental health, provide foundational community education, increase access to local resources and supports, and create a space for community members to feel supported via peer sharing. In addition to presentation execution, the Lead Educational Presenter would support curriculum review and development.
Schedule and Location
Minimum 5 hours per week. Schedule varies by week - variables include location, time, and number of presentations. Typical presentation hours: 8a - 4p at high schools, evenings for parent/caregiver, and public presentations. Combination of in-person and virtual work. In-person locations include high schools throughout San Francisco, including in the Sunset, Richmond, Twin Peaks, Mission, Hayes Valley, and Marina neighborhoods, among others. Remote work when not executing in-person presentations.
Internship: January - May 2023
Compensation: $35 stipend/presentation (possible part-time role on staff - TBD)
Responsibilities
● Lead educational presentations for a range of populations, including but not limited to students (mostly high school students), parents/caregivers, and public audiences.
● Engage with presentation hosts in a courteous and professional manner
● Engage presentation attendees in an empathetic and compassionate manner, consistent with NAMI SF mission to provide culturally sensitive, supportive community education
● Complete post-presentation reports in a timely manner; report to the Director of Education Programming once a week (virtually)
● Support curriculum design, development, implementation, and feedback processes for student, parent/caregiver, and public programs
● Administrative responsibilities associated with educational presentations, as assigned
Qualifications
● Identify as a peer (someone who experiences a mental health condition)
● Identify as a young adult (18-30 years old)
● Be willing to share personal story with mental health condition(s)
● Be able to travel throughout San Francisco for in-person presentations
● Be able to lead 1-4 presentations per week for students, in person, from January - May (presentation schedule varies)
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
● Passion for mental health advocacy and education
● Strong public speaking and public presentation skills, both in-person and virtually
● Strong communication skills; ability to work collaboratively with community partners
● Ability to receive and implement constructive feedback
● Ability to practice active-listening listening and engage constructive conversations about mental health, stigma, and local resources
● Excellent time-management and organizational skills
● Comfortable hosting Zoom meetings
