McCarthy Fellows in San Francisco

McCarthy Fellows in San Francisco is a Fall 2023 semester-long program that integrates a part-time internship with the City & County of San Francisco alongside a rigorous academic seminar. Students develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions to be informed participants in democratic life while also contributing to local policymaking, administration, and politics aimed at shaping San Francisco into a more inclusive and equitable city. The program emphasizes the historic and political-economic background of San Francisco through rigorous academic content, structured reflection, and professional development to prepare students with the knowledge and analytical skills to be ethical public service leaders.

The program is a pipeline that connects University of San Francisco students to City Hall, fostering a new generation of local leaders for the common good. Students who participate in the program have opportunities to grow in public service and to positively impact their communities through local government in a meaningful and impactful pathway in order to shape a more resilient, equitable, and innovative city.

McCarthy Fellows in Sacramento

McCarthy Fellows in Sacramento is a Summer 2023 program where fellows spend 12 weeks in full-time internships at Sacramento institutions that contribute to the CA policymaking process. In this experience, students are exposed to the structures and systems that shape state policy-making processes, including internships in an assembly member’s or state senator’s office, or at an executive state agency, lobbying firm, or non-profit organization. Students live, work, and learn in the state capital, while taking advantage of powerful educational opportunities within the context of their internships and the co-curricular offerings that abound in their thriving host city. All majors are welcome to apply.

USF in Washington, D.C.

USF in DC is a semester-long program in Washington, DC that integrates a full-time internship with coursework taught by USF faculty and University of California Washington Program faculty. Students experience first-hand the culture and politics of Washington, D.C. where they will live, learn, and explore all that DC has to offer. They take academically rigorous courses, connect with influential policymakers, media, and alumni, and pursue various civic engagement opportunities at our nation’s capital. Participants have access to a range of programming, activities, and events while building real-world experience at a full-time internship and build transferable skills to be public servants.

The program is a pipeline that connects University of San Francisco students and exposes them to national politics and policymaking in Washington, D.C. Alongside students from across the country, this new generation of leaders study, research, work, and live within Washington’s rich cultural, political and international heritage. Students have opportunities to grow in public service and to positively impact their communities by learning about the political processes in a meaningful and impactful pathway in order to shape a more just and equitable country for the common good.
